L’Abarth 1000 SP degli anni Sessanta ispira una one-off evocativa

・Abarth 1000 SP: un nome che fa ancora battere il cuore agli appassionati della casa dello Scorpione.
・Progettata nel 1966 dall’ingegnere milanese Mario Colucci, l’Abarth 1000 Sport Prototipo fu una spider leggera e potente, costruita in pochi esemplari, che fece incetta di vittorie in tutta Europa contribuendo a diffondere la fama del marchio.
・Reinterpretando le forme della 1000 SP, nel 2009 il Centro Stile lancia l’idea di realizzare un’auto sportiva dalle linee essenziali ma accattivanti.
・Nel 2021, a 55 anni esatti dal debutto dello storico modello, il progetto viene rielaborato e perfezionato: Abarth 1000 SP rinasce sotto forma di una one-off dalle linee audaci ma coerenti con l’antesignana.


Nella seconda metà degli anni Cinquanta, Alfa Romeo e Abarth collaborarono per realizzare una vettura sportiva di cilindrata contenuta. Il progetto, affidato a Mario Colucci, ingegnere milanese e dipendente Alfa Romeo, si concretizzò nel 1958 con la produzione di un’ Alfa Romeo di derivazione Abarth 1000, una coupè compatta – spinta da un motore realizzato a partire dal quattro cilindri della Giulietta Sprint Veloce, ma ridotto nella cilindrata – e caratterizzata dal telaio a traliccio di tubi. La vettura, “vestita” da una carrozzeria realizzata da Bertone su disegno di Franco Scaglione, resta un esemplare unico.
Al termine di questa collaborazione, Colucci venne assunto come Direttore Tecnico da Carlo Abarth e, nel 1966, gli venne affidato l’ambizioso progetto della Abarth 1000 SP: il nome della vettura indica la cilindrata del motore – derivato da quello della Fiat 600 – e la categoria Sport Prototipo, la tipologia di vetture a ruote coperte realizzate solo per partecipare alle competizioni e costruite in piccola serie. Concepita per eccellere sia nelle brevi corse di salita sia nelle gare di durata, la 1000 SP è caratterizzata da linee semplici, basse e filanti. Leggera e potente, conquistò un’importante serie di vittorie internazionali – prima fra tutte quella ottenuta nella sua classe alla 500 km del Nürburgring, nel settembre 1966 – che contribuirono a consolidare il prestigio sportivo del marchio Abarth. L’ingegner Colucci portava così a compimento la sua concezione di vettura da competizione a telaio tubolare, iniziata qualche anno prima con l’Alfa Romeo Abarth 1000.

Considerata a giusto titolo una pietra miliare nella storia agonistica dell’Abarth, per stile, prestazioni e vittorie conquistate, la 1000 SP continua a ispirare i designer del Centro Stile Fiat e Abarth che immaginano una reinterpretazione contemporanea dell’iconica Sport Prototipo degli anni Sessanta: un’auto sportiva di taglia media, dalla silhouette accattivante e dalle linee essenziali. Quest’idea di vettura, leggera e dall’eccellente rapporto peso/potenza, diventa la base di un progetto realizzato nel 2021, in piena coerenza con l’antesignana: punti e linee del design della vettura originale vengono rispettati per garantire la continuità tra la sportiva degli anni Sessanta e la concept car del nuovo millennio.
Nell’Abarth 1000 SP vengono rispettati tre principi di design fondamentali già nella vettura degli anni Sessanta. Innanzitutto la leggerezza, nelle forme, nei volumi e ovviamente anche nel peso.
Il secondo principio è quello dell’aerodinamica: le moderne tecnologie di progettazione hanno permesso di coniugare le iconiche linee della 1000 SP con un coefficiente aerodinamico all’altezza di una sportiva dei tempi moderni.
Infine l’ergonomia, finalizzata a migliorare l’esperienza d’uso, assicurando l’ottimizzazione del controllo del mezzo e un’agile guidabilità.

Nell’Abarth 1000 SP riecheggiano linee ed elementi estetici che caratterizzavano la sua progenitrice. Il corpo vettura sinuoso, con le superfici morbide dei parafanghi che evidenziano la posizione delle ruote, riprende lo schema della spider a motore centrale. La vetratura del cockpit è caratterizzata da deflettori laterali sagomati, con il profilo ribassato verso il roll-bar, quest’ultimo rigorosamente “a vista” per sottolineare ulteriormente che siamo davanti a una spider “senza compromessi”.
Le geometrie del posteriore della Abarth 1000 SP sottolineano un’armonia perfetta tra i gruppi ottici e gli scarichi. La livrea è rigorosamente rossa e su tutto il corpo vettura compaiono le caratteristiche prese d’aria, dal cofano anteriore fino agli slot di raffreddamento su quello posteriore. Anche la fanaleria rispetta lo schema minimalista della 1000 SP storica, con proiettori puntiformi sul muso e una sola coppia di fanali rotondi a sottolineare la notevole larghezza dell’auto dalla vista posteriore. L’ Abarth 1000 SP mantiene quindi un’identità del tutto simile all’antesignana. Merito dell’attento lavoro di attualizzazione della Abarth 1000 SP storica che non ha lasciato spazio a compromessi.

Sotto la “pelle”, invece, il telaio tubolare della storica Sport Prototipo lascia il posto a un telaio ibrido, con la cellula centrale in fibra di carbonio e l’avantreno in alluminio. L’ Abarth 1000 SP dispone di un potente motore centrale 4 cilindri sovralimentato in alluminio, da 1742 cc, capace di erogare fino a 240 CV di potenza. La raffinata meccanica della concept vanta sospensioni a triangoli sovrapposti all’anteriore, mentre al posteriore sono presenti sospensioni con schema Macpherson evoluto.

A 55 anni esatti dal debutto della sua progenitrice, l’Abarth 1000 SP, attualmente prodotta in un unico esemplare, è pronta a mettersi di nuovo in mostra e, in autunno, prenderà parte a importanti manifestazioni dedicate alle auto storiche.

The 1960s Abarth 1000 SP inspires an evocative one-off

Only a limited number of units were built, and would come in victorious all over Europe, helping to spread the brand's fame. ・Reinterpreting the forms of the 1000 SP, in 2009 the Centro Stile launches the idea of producing a sports car with essential yet eye-catching lines. ・In 2021, exactly 55 years after the debut of the historic model, the project was redeveloped and refined: The Abarth 1000 SP is reborn as a one-off with bold lines, yet in line with its forerunner.


In the latter half of the 1950s, Alfa Romeo and Abarth worked in tandem to produce a sports car with a limited displacement. Entrusted to Mario Colucci – a Milan engineer and Alfa Romeo employee, the project came to fruition in 1958 with the manufacturing of an Abarth 1000-based Alfa Romeo, a compact coupé – driven by an engine based on the 4-cylinder Sprint Veloce, but with a lower displacement – and characterized by a chassis consisting of a lattice of pipes. “Dressed up” in bodywork made by Bertone to a design by Franco Scaglione, the car remains a unique piece.
At the end of this collaboration, Carlo Abarth hired Colucci as Technical Director, then in 1966 entrusted him with the ambitious project of the Abarth 1000 SP. The car’s name indicates the engine displacement – derived from that of the Fiat 600 – and the Sport Prototipo class, the type of closed-wheel cars produced specifically to take part in competitions and constructed in limited editions. Designed to excel in both short hillclimbs and endurance races, the 1000 SP features simple, low and sleek lines. Lightweight and powerful, it won a major series of international victories – the first of which in its class at the Nürburgring 500 km in September 1966, helping to consolidate the sporting prestige of the Abarth brand. The skilled engineer Colucci thus completed his concept of a tubular chassis racing car, which had begun a few years earlier with the Alfa Romeo Abarth 1000.

Rightly considered a milestone in Abarth’s competitive history, in terms of style, performance and victories, the 1000 SP continues to inspire the designers at the Centro Stile Fiat & Abarth. They have now produced a contemporary reinterpretation of the iconic 1960s Sport Prototipo: a medium-sized sports car, with an eye-catching silhouette and essential lines. This idea of a lightweight car with an excellent weight-to-power ratio became the basis of a project that became reality in 2021, fully in line with its forerunner: the points and lines of the original car’s design were respected to ensure continuity between the ’60s sports car and the concept car of the new millennium.
The Abarth 1000 SP respects three fundamental design principles already seen in the ’60s model. First and foremost, the lightness of its forms, its volumes and of course its weight.
The second principle is aerodynamics: modern design technologies have made it possible to combine the iconic lines of the 1000 SP with an aerodynamic coefficient worthy of a contemporary sports car.
Finally, ergonomics, aimed at improving the user experience, to optimize the vehicle's control and agile driveability.

The Abarth 1000 SP echoes the lines and aesthetics characteristic of its forerunner. The sinuous body, with the soft surfaces of the fenders highlighting the position of the wheels, takes up the pattern of the spider with a central engine. The cockpit glazing features shaped side deflectors, with their profile lowered towards the roll bar, the latter strictly “in view”, to highlight our being in the presence of a “no-holds-barred” spider.
The rear geometries of the Abarth 1000 SP accentuate the ideal harmony between the lights and the exhaust pipes. The livery is strictly red and the characteristic air intakes appear all over, from the front bonnet to the cooling slots in its rear counterpart. The headlights also follow the minimalist scheme of the historic 1000 SP, with point lights on the nose and a single pair of round headlights to accentuate the car’s remarkable breadth when seen from behind. The Abarth 1000 SP thus maintains a very similar identity to its forerunner's, courtesy of the meticulous work to update the historic, no-holds-barred Abarth 1000 SP.

Conversely, the tubular chassis under the “skin” of the historic Sport Prototipo gives way to a hybrid frame, with a central cell in carbon fiber and an aluminum front. The Abarth 1000 SP features a powerful turbocharged 4-cylinder, 1742-cc central engine, capable of delivering up to 240 hp in output. The sophisticated mechanics of the concept boast overlapping triangle suspension in the front, with an advanced MacPherson strut in the rear.

Precisely 55 years after the debut of its forerunner, the Abarth 1000 SP – only one model of which has been produced to date – is once again ready to strut its stuff: in the fall, it will be taking part in major events focused on vintage cars.
